Art Thou Then the Son of God?

The purpose of this life is for us as sons and daughters of God to be proved herewith to see if we "will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them" (Abraham 3:25), to become one also as the Father and the Son are one, and to be "made perfect in one" (see John 17:22-23).

To reach our divine potential and continue faithful and complete our mission to become one in Christ (see Galatians 3:27-28), we must first know who we are.

In a 2022 worldwide devotional for young adults, President Russell M. Nelson stressed 3 fundamental truths that would set them and us on the right course of becoming. Of these 3 truths, the first was to know the truth about who you are. President Nelson emphasized that knowing who you are, a literal child of God, and embracing this truth will help us, with help from our Heavenly Father, reach our ultimate goal of reaching our divine potential to become as He is.

In the last few verses of Luke 22 we receive a beautiful example from our Savior Jesus Christ boldly identifying Himself as the Son of God. Jesus had just been taken into custody and was mocked and smitten and then led to into the council of the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes (see Luke 22:63-66). There, we was asked 2 different questions. First, they asked if He is the Christ, and Jesus responds by saying that they wouldn't believe Him even if He told them (Luke 22:67). Then they all asked Him, "Art thou then the Son of God?" to which He responds, "I am" (Luke 22:70). Jesus Christ knew who He was, and boldly declared that He was not only a son of God, but The Son of God.

We, like the Savior can gain much confidence to "press forward with a steadfastness in Christ" to complete our individual missions in this life and prove our willingness to do whatsoever the Lord shall command us when we know who we really are (2 Nephi 31:20). This truth, as we diligently seek to know and understand and believe it, will allow God to give us glimpses of who we can become as His children and reach the "ultimate goal of living eternally in His holy presence" (see Nelson, R. M. Choices for Eternity [Devotional]).
